May Photo Challenge... in progress

I started the month with this challenge... it is a two year old challenge that was for competition purposes but I just liked it so I decided to do it for myself.  I am one day behind because I was in travel mode.  I am hoping to work through the list at my leisure instead of being strict with days at this point.  Want to see days 1-7?  Head over to my Instagram and friend me, if you have not already, to see all my photography endeavors.  I think Instagram might be my favorite Social Media outlet because I love all of the creative photos without all the chatter of Facebook.  It is truly a happy place online for me these days.

Are you an amateur photographer, take photos of your sewing, crochet, artwork etc... too?

Do you share your creative work online?

Leave a link in the comments so we can all have a gander

(keep it clean, though... no inappropriate photo linking please...
you will be deleted and blocked from this blog)

You can see more photo and other crafting classes and mini challenges from Craftsy at their site.

Finishing October with Family Photos

I made it...

I made it to the end of October and to the end of the Write 31 Days Challenge.

This post is a little bit late because our Saturday blew up!

The Habit of Taking Pictures is represented by this post because I try to take at least one every day.

I thought I would give the brain a bit of a rest and just share some October photos with you guys.  I know my mom would surely want to see some since she reminds me all the time of how she NEVER gets to see pictures.  LOL

So, here they are...

Senior Night... last home game of the season.  She loves her Daddy!

Twin Day at school for Red Ribbon Week

Throwback Day - 1940's for one and uniform day for JROTC for the other.

Nerd Day!

More Senior Night

Dress to Impress Day

Halloween costumes... Bane (the mask is coming from a friend when he gets to school)
 and Portrait of Dorian Gray

Another Portrait of Dorian Gray

Just because I love her!

There was a lot of Senior and Band stuff this month and she is tired!  LOL

Someone else had a birthday this month...

No photos of him... there was a birthday box sent and lots of conversations but no photos today.

22 years now!

The Habit of Prayer

I do not think that there is one person on the entire planet that ever feels like they pray enough.
I know I don't.

There is no wrong place or time to pray.  There is no wrong position to pray from... kneeling, standing, sitting, lying down, driving with your eyes open or head bowed in a pew.  The problem is that we just don't do it.  We are bombarded from the moment we wake up in the morning with the crazy.  I love this quote from C. S. Lewis...

We need to find that time and place to be quiet and spend time connecting with God but like Lewis says here it needs to be constant all day and not just once or twice a day.

Prayer is about relationship and communication with God.  We pray in order to build that relationship.  He knows all of the things we are going to say but He uses all of it to shape us to look more like Jesus.  You wouldn't only talk to your spouse when you are in trouble so why do we only talk to God when we are in trouble?  God wants to be the FIRST on our list when we need to talk to someone.

The Jesus Habits gives a great list entitled...

What Are the Enemies of the Habit of Prayer?

*  Praying for the wrong reasons
*  Praying while hanging onto sin
*  Praying when you have had a closed Bible
*  Praying but not believing God will answer
*  Praying with God not being number one
*  Praying with hypocrisy
*  Praying with an unforgiving spirit
*  Praying while there is conflict in your marriage
*  Praying without being a Christian
*  Prayers that never get offered

This is the abbreviated list but there is more explanation and detail with each item listed.

There is also a list on

Making Prayer a Habit

*  Choose to pray; don't wait until you feel like it
*  Make prayer a part of your day, not just a set time
*  Pray scripture back to God
*  Decide never to make a major decision without praying about it first
*  Pray before leaving your home in the morning
*  Confess sin immediately
*  Try different positions for prayer - standing, sitting, kneeling, on your face...
*  Keep it simple
*  Never give up. Keep on praying.
*  Expect answers

It has lots of great information on how Jesus habits can be implemented in our daily lives.

Here are some resources on prayer to encourage and help you to find more time to pray.  I am certainly not the expert but other people have shared some great stuff online that we can all glean from.

Have you seen the movie War Room?  There is a book by Priscilla Shirer that is connected to the movie, too.  It is called Fervent.  Prayer strategies for women...

Do you have regular prayer time each day?

Do you have a prayer closet or "war room" in your home?

Do you keep a prayer journal?

The Habit of Gardening

I, inadvertently, opted out of big gardening projects this past year.  I just did not have it in me to spend another summer fighting the bugs and the heat only to have a small output.  I must admit I missed it.

I am looking forward to getting back on the horse, so to speak, this next spring.  In the meantime, I am going to write up a plan (in the bullet journal) to do a little each day in the garden to prepare for spring.  The fall and winter garden are quiet right now and in dire need of some serious weeding and replenishing of soil nutrients.

It might be a good plan to put some bulbs in so we have that splash of color come early spring.  The early blooming flowers get me excited to plant. too.

My typical morning routine for the garden often includes a cup of coffee in one hand as I walk around watering trees, shrubs, flowers and herbs.  In the summer I water the grass, too, but once the temperature drops below 60 degrees at night the grass goes dormant and does not need to be watered again until late spring.

I pulled the last of the pomegranates and pecans off the trees and all the other fruit trees are starting to have some yellow and orange tinge to their leaves.  It won't be long before they will be bare and ready for a winter pruning.  The rose bushes will join them for the cold weather trim, too.

If I spend about 10 minutes a day pulling weeds as I water I can get the whole overgrown mess under control again before winter.  So, my plan is to water, weed and enjoy the cooler morning temperatures as soon as the time changes this coming Sunday.  It will, once again, be light enough to go out earlier in the mornings.

The Habit of Creativity

One of the biggest things I have realized through reading more about habits is that you cannot ditch one habit without filling that space with something else.  A good habit needs to replace a bad habit.

Over the next few days I want to share some habits I want to add to my life in the spaces as I purge bad habits more and more.

Today, I want to examine the habit of creativity with you.

First of all, I don't believe some people are born with more or less potential for creativity than anyone else.  I think it is something that is nurtured much more than nature. How we raise our children and the kind of example we give them teaches them the importance we place on creativity in our lives and in our homes.  Everyone can have creative outlets and stretch themselves in this realm more.

When we encourage reading, provide lots of print materials, read in front of our children and to our children it raises the likelihood that they will be readers and that they will love books.

When we play music, have instruments in the home, sing together as we work and play, children learn that this is a normal part of life.  When we provide opportunities to play, take lessons, encourage and provide time to practice then they will most likely become musical.

My SIL always has lots of things around the home for "art projects" for her kids.  Her mother provided that for her.  She studied art in college and has some amazing stuff she has produced over the years.  Her mother has painted and done calligraphy for as long as I have known her.  Now, my SIL's daughters are all artistic, too.

If you want creative children then provide creative things for them to do.

As an adult, I want to find that creative child again.  I want to play my flute and piano again.  I want to work on crochet and sewing projects.  I want to pick my calligraphy pens back up and try my hand at some drawing projects.  I want to take my camera out and just photograph things more... maybe even take a photography class.  I want to replace the unproductive parts of my day with creative habits.

When we talk about creativity we are not insinuating that we can create as God does.  He can create something from nothing but we can create using things around us to make something new.  I do believe, as a creation of God we have been given the ability to be unique and creative beings in His image.  I believe we should explore art, music, dance, etc...

This is still very much in progress for me so I have listed three great articles I am contemplating and a book on the subject I will be exploring.

A dancer (Twyla Tharp) talks about the habit of creativity and how that plays out in life.  Cannot wait to dive in!  I will let you know what I think.

Interesting little tidbit about me.. I took dance lessons from about age 3 until I was heading into high school and I took twirling lessons from middle school through high school.  I have done aerobics for decades and trained and taught aerobics for some time in my 30's before baby #3. So, dance and movement to music is a thing with me...  LOL  I love the discipline of dance.  I do Pilates now and that is connected to ballet.  It became very popular in the 1960's in ballet circles as part of their routine to keep them in shape and train their core.

So, now it is your turn... do you have a creative habit you want to explore more?

Do you incorporate some form of creativity into your days?

If you could learn one skill you have never tried before what would it be?

The Habit of the Landing Place

I mentioned the idea of a launch pad earlier in the series.  This is a Flylady term for putting all of your stuff in a place that is easy to find and grab as you walk out the door first thing in the morning.

The key to this is having a good landing place or pad when you come back in.  I have had to decide where I want to put things down when I walk in so that I am not scrambling for stuff when I need it again.

My keys have a home so that is where they go when I come in.

There is a strategically placed key rack where keys live in our home.  I own two keys and they are on one key chain.  Dan owns about 50 billion and they also live on this rack.  It is a small miracle that this rack is still hanging on the wall but it is.

I have three places (besides the ignition of the car or the front door) where my keys are at any given time.  The first place is the key rack where they live overnight.  The second is hooked onto my purse. They are attached to a carabiner and it hooks conveniently onto stuff.  The third place is hooked to the belt loop of my pants.  If I follow this system and never just lay my keys down randomly then I do not scramble to find them... EVER.  It is a lovely habit and my sanity is intact when it comes to keys.

Do you have a system for keeping up with keys?

I also have a landing place for my purse, books and other things I take with me when I leave the house.  I take an electric blanket with me to work (because it is always 62 degrees in the house I work in twice a week.... for medical reasons for my client).  I keep that in a bag just by the front door so I can grab and go and when I come in with it I park it there immediately.

The kids have not been as successful with this system because they tend to drop stuff randomly but they are working on it with my nagging.... oh, I mean help.  Ha!  I am not responsible for my husband's landing places.  I would not dare.  We do not think alike all the time so I don't impose my system on him.

I also have a book in the bag that goes with me... all the time.  Once I finish a book it gets shelved or put in the giveaway box by the front door and then I replace it with the next book in line.

All of this brings delightful sanity to my days.  When I have to rummage for something or it is not in it's home that throws me for a loop.  If a child moves something of mine we are in trouble.  LOL  It slows us down and makes my brain crazy.  With Lupus less crazy is better.

Do you have a landing pad for things when you walk in the front door?

If you don't I recommend deciding on that place today and then start using it immediately!  It really is a small habit that can rock your world for the better.

What kinds of things can live on a landing pad?

*  Keys
*  Books
*  Bags/Purse/Backpacks for school
*  Coats/Sweaters/Jackets
*  Hats/Scarves/Gloves
*  Shoes/Boots/Galoshes
*  Anything you need to grab and go

The Habit of Trying New Recipes

TODAY IS A CHALLENGE!!!

Add a new recipe to your meal rotation.

Get in the habit of making a new recipe every week or every two weeks or once a month.  It doesn't matter as long as you try something new from time to time.

There is no reason you cannot find one.  They are all over the internet by way of Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram and a whole slew of food sites and blogs.  The amount of cookbooks on the market is staggering so you should be able to find something.  I have some scattered throughout my blog if you want to start there!  LOL

I tried one this week.

This week I made Salisbury Steak for the very first time.  I made the onion soup mix and the gravy from scratch so I could skip the chemicals.  I used this recipe and if you have been here for long you know I gave it my own spin.  I am always tweaking recipes to fit our family tastes and dietary needs.

The second one I am doing this weekend is from a post I saw on Facebook.  It was a video from BuzzFeed Tasty Videos.  A sausage and apple stuffed acorn squash will be made Saturday for dinner.

Do you try new recipes from time to time?

Do you have a recent new favorite that you have tried that you would share with us?

Do you have a favorite cookbook you like to use when finding new recipes?

The Salisbury Steak was a recipe I remember eating as a child.

Do you have a favorite childhood recipe that you would like to learn to make?

The Habit of Saying No

You know those people... the ones you can ask to do anything and they will say yes.  Their schedules are full of projects and activities that are all noble.  They volunteer in school with the PTA and scouts as a den mother or a committee member.  They run the annual summer camp and spend six months preparing for it.  They are on every committee at church.  They are in garden club/women's club/junior league, etc...  They are women's ministry leaders with several studies going per week.  They volunteer at the local soup kitchen and head up the latest clothing drive or popcorn sale or rummage sale.  All of this on top of holding down a full or part time job.
Everyone loves them because they are people pleasers.  They keep the world going... or at least they think they do.

They are exhausted!

I know they are exhausted because I used to be one.

I was that person until I was diagnosed with Lupus.  Since that time I have had to learn to say no more and more to things that are not the best for me or my family.

I have learned that it is important to listen to God to know what He wants me to do.  No matter how good something is, if it is not what God wants in my life, I need to say no to it.  I need to walk toward what I am called to do and not just stuff that might be good or noble or beneficial.  I have to look for the best and do it.  Each person's best is different in many respects and yet, to some degree the same.  Our ultimate purpose is to glorify God but the way I glorify God may not look like how you glorify God.  Same goal... different role to play.

I remember when I was a young pastor's wife.  Our church did not have a pianist for some reason.  I had taken piano from the time I was a girl through college, so the congregation... and my husband... assumed that I would be able to step in and fill that role.  It is often assumed pastor's and music ministry wives can and want to play piano for a church.  I was not one of those.

I would practice and practice throughout the week.  I was fine alone but when it was time to play with the hymns on Sunday I would freeze up and get nervous.  I was horrible and often stopped in the middle of songs because I could not keep up.  That was crazy because I could do it at home.  I could play the flute and sing and stay with a director just fine.  It was the overwhelming urge to throw up that clued me in to the fact that I was not called to do this.  The job was someone else's job and I needed to walk away and let someone else find that role.

Since that time I have had to verbally say, "I am the pastor's wife that is NOT called to be a pianist!"  to several congregations over the years.

I do have a calling...

I was called to the kitchen instead.  I have never once felt like losing my stomach while running a kitchen or setting up for a wedding or funeral reception.  Church dinner holds no fear for me.  I am fine with both cooking and serving.  I am quite good at it, as a matter of fact.  It is something God wired me for.  I am not saying we are always comfortable for the role that God calls us to but there should be some passion involved.

Do you want to know a little secret?  I still play piano at home just for fun when I can squeeze time in between the children playing.  I just cannot do that in front of the church... ever again.

I have dropped many responsibilities since my diagnosis.  My priorities have changed drastically.  If it does not benefit God's kingdom and my family I think long and hard (and pray a lot) before I take on anything extra.

Further Reading

I have recently read Your Sacred Yes by Susie Larson  about this very concept.  It is a beautiful book full of encouragement for us to seek God's best for our life.  I highly recommend it if you are seeking answers in this realm.

Another book that comes highly recommended by a precious friend of mine is sitting in my TBR queue.  Lysa Terkeurst's book The Best Yes covers this topic well.

The Habit Stacking Concept

My theme for 2015 is Discipline.

Over the last 10 months I have been trying to build more discipline into my days.  I have been reading the Bible in a year again.  I have been reading it on my YouVersion each day.  I have tried to do it in a different way than before so I opted to use the "read to me" option and have been listening to God's word out loud each day for the entire year.  I am actually on track with this goal because I have tagged it with a few other habits I have been developing.

My early morning looks like this...

Wake
Bathroom
Wake kids
Water - 32 ounces
Breakfast and first cup of coffee
Kids out the door
Make my bed
Start a load of laundry
Clear breakfast dishes
Grab second cup of coffee and sit down and read the Bible - NOW!

All of this is done between 5:30am and 7:00am and then I am ready to move on to other stuff like computer work, errands, daily cleaning projects, planning and starting dinner, off to work my twice a week job, etc...

Each one of these things has become a habit over the past 10 months but I did not  add them all at once.  My Bible reading was pretty sporadic until I stacked it onto a well oiled list of other habits.

Changes Requires New Habits for Me

I had lots of changes this year with a son leaving for the Marine Corps, my second started her senior year of high school (and all that comes with that Pandora's Box) and my youngest going into public school.  The only one that remained status quo was my middle boy and he has been the anchor in the shifting tides.  This was the first time in my life as a mother that I did not have all my chicks in one nest and at least one under my roof consistently.  It has been emotionally taxing but I was ready and so were they.  We had been preparing for these changes all along.

I cannot tell you there were no tears the first few days but I have been adjusting to life at home without the kids during the day.  I have had my own schedule and daily routine to revamp in the process.  This time it has been about developing a system that allows me to get everything done by 4:00 pm so I can just be the wife and mom when everyone comes back in that front door.  My goals have included a cleaner home and meals prepared on time to enjoy them as a family each night.  I am spending more time reading for me, blogging and writing more,  and working through some deep cleaning projects and such.  I have more I want to add as I get a more habits under my belt.  I will add more crochet and sewing time to work on things I have been putting off for years.

In all of this I have been putting small habits into my day a little at a time and then building upon those habits with more habits. I love this concept of Habit Stacking!

The basic definition of habit stacking is to take a habit that already exists, like brushing your teeth, and adding a second habit that is triggered by the first.  For me, brushing my teeth triggers me to take my nightly medications before bed.  In the morning that looks like... start laundry, clear dishes, READ MY BIBLE!

This is a great video I found on the subject to share more about this concept.  I am also linking you to some great blogs on the topic.  I love that I don't always have to be the expert but I can still share good information with you from other people who ARE the experts.  I am still learning, too... EVERY SINGLE DAY!

My next added habit to my mornings will be walk out the door for a short walk each day.  I will stack it with one of the other habits there but I am not sure where, yet.  It is a process, right?

The Habit of Charging Those Electronics

You know the scenario...

You are in the middle of something really cool that your kids are doing and you go to snap a picture and... nothing.... the battery is completely dead or it tells you there is not enough battery to complete that action.

You are in the middle of reading the best book of your entire life on your e-reader!  Right as the best chapter and most important part of the story is happening it goes dark... dead battery.  It powers down and you didn't even get to bookmark that page.

You are in the middle of writing the best blog post or the most important term paper you have ever written and.... you guessed it.... the computer powers down and you are sitting there with no access to a plug.

These are all times you wished you had thought ahead and charged your device before you left the house.

I have learned the hard way that everything has to be on a charger before I head to bed or it will be of no use to me the next day.

I must admit that this habit is still in progress in our house.  We are working through setting up a station and making everyone put things on chargers.

Here are some fun things I have been looking at...

This page has some great ideas with a Charging Station in the mix for your teens.

It's your turn...

The Habit of Taking Medications, Vitamins and/or Supplements

Most of us take medications or some kind of pills each day.

For me, it is important to have this on cruise control so I don't miss something. I have the issue of having to take certain pills at different times so they don't counteract others. Some medications cannot be taken with a vitamin supplement because certain things prevent absorption of certain medications.

Vitamin D is something I have to take but it prevents my thyroid medication from doing it's job. Calcium also blocks thyroid med absorption.  Some things cannot be taken with Vitamin C or with iron supplements. Talk to your doctor about these issues and make a plan to avoid them.

It is a simple fix for me. I just take the thyroid pill at night and the multivitamin in the morning. One just before bed that is linked to brushing my teeth and the other with my morning water routine before breakfast. My Lupus medication can actually be taken twice per day and with food so I take one with breakfast and one with dinner when I am on them.

Other pills, like allergy pills or decongestant/mucus pills, need to be checked with a contraindications chart or a pharmacist, nurse, or doctor before adding them. If you are taking herbal supplements or essential oils please check those with a professional before you use them to be safe as well. Do not put yourself in jeopardy.

Sometimes lifestyle/food/beverage choices cause problems... smoking, drinking alcohol, some foods you eat might be affecting the potency of your meds, coffee, certain juices, taking with or without food.  Make sure you take a look at all of these factors.

If you still forget or are not sure when to take them then it might be time for a pill taker box and a conference with your doctor.  I have used those little pill boxes when I had a plethora of meds when I have been sick or when the kids have been sick.  There is no shame in it so just do what works for you!  You don't want to miss taking medications or have them be ineffective when you do take them.

Do you have a system that works for you?

Please share it with us!

The Habit of Being on Time

I am one of those people.

I like to be on time or, better yet, early to everything I have to go to.

I have not always been able to be on time due to the occasional unforeseen and/or unexpected circumstances but as far as I am able to control the situation I am on time.

The key to being on time to commitments, classes, events and such is a stack of other habits I have put into place.

My List of Habits for Punctuality

1.  I get things ready the night before when I have to be out the door first thing in the morning.  I have, what Flylady calls, a launch pad area where I put bags and things that have to go out the door with me.

2.  I assess the time it takes to get to places and then add at least 10 minutes to that.  There are apps now that can tell you if there is traffic on your way or other road issues like construction or bad weather.  Give yourself plenty of time so you are not putting yourself and your family in harm's way by being in a big hurry.

3.  I often move the departure time up.  If I need to be somewhere at 6:30 I tell everyone I have to leave by 6:00 instead of 6:15 so no one is pushing the boundary too closely.

4.  I do other prep work like making breakfast items or packing things for lunch the night before.  I spend weekends prepping some meals that can be cooked or reheated quickly during the week so we can be out the door for things like scouts, band, lessons, etc... with a good meal in our stomachs.

5.  I keep my laundry caught up so that we are not looking for something at the last minute only to find that it is dirty and unwearable when we need it.

6.  Keep in mind how long it takes to do something so you know how much time you need to get ready.  I know it takes me about 10 minutes to go through the process of showering and dressing to shoes.  It takes me about 10 - 15 more minutes to do the makeup and hair on Sundays. So, I plan on at least half an hour to get ready in the mornings but give myself a 10 minute buffer just in case.

7.  Don't get distracted.... by your phone, computer, television, reading, etc.  You can always check your e-mail or Facebook once you get to where you are going and are waiting.  Keep that book in your bag or throw it in on the way out the door so you can enjoy a few minutes with it without being rushed.

8.  Everything lives on the calendar as soon as I am made aware of it.  I check the calendar at night before bedtime and again first thing in the morning.  As soon as I am made aware of something I write it down immediately.

9.  I follow the "early to bed and early to rise" principle.  This is always the plan when I have to be out of the house early.  It takes me about 30 minutes to really be moving well in the morning so I start a half hour before I need to be on the move.

10.  I keep a current contact list in case I need to notify people we are going to be late.  The band director, the lady I work for, a friend I am meeting... they all get an instant text or call if there is a glitch on the way out the door.  This just happened this week with my husband's car having a flat tire as they were preparing to head to early band rehearsal.  We were able to text the director immediately and let him know the kids were going to be a few minutes late.  We switched vehicles and revamped our plan for the day.  Things do come up and sometimes you are late but have a contingency plan when possible and work ahead of schedule just in case.

One thing I have learned...

My husband and I are very different in how we approach time management and punctuality.  He has a "one more thing" rule and I have to admit that he is often late to things because of this but it does not bother him to be late like it does me.  He pushes the time on every task he does.  He is always trying to fit one more thing in between getting ready to leave and getting somewhere.

I don't think he would be happy following my rule... the "hurry up and wait" rule.   He doesn't see the need for free time when he can pack more productivity into the crevices of his day.  He fills his time with very little time to spare and does not like to be early or have to wait.  He will if it happens but it is not his favorite.

I, on the other hand, have absolutely no issue showing up early and sitting and waiting on something or someone.  I always have a book, a bullet journal, or something else to keep me busy during that time of waiting.

If you really think about it we have the same idea in mind because we want to be proactive or productive with our time.  The only difference is that I will show up early and then wait but he wants to work up to the last possible minute and then get there a few minutes late.

This has caused a little stress for us but I can only control me... so I do.  This is truly a personality thing with us.  We have to live with other people... at home... at work... at church.  Be flexible with others.  Again, you can only control you in the end.  Do your best to be courteous of other people's time and extend grace to those around you when they don't follow your personal rules for you.

Do you struggle to get places on time?

Have you ever forgotten to be somewhere due to lack of planning?

Do you have a system for being on time?
