You Have Just Entered the READING Zone...

Vacation, for us, is almost over.  I think we have about a week and a half before the routine starts back up with band rehearsal and getting a girl ready to go back to college.  We are headed into back to school mode very quickly.  I am trying to squeeze the last bit of luxurious laziness out of what is left of our days.

This particular weekend there happens to be a 24 in 48 hour readathon.   I have signed up and have two books that I need to work through before I make the August TBR.  Check out the website link above for more details.  I will try to post my plan tomorrow here.  I hope you can join us!

The photo above is from the 24in48 website and organizers.

There is also a week long BookTubeathon starting Monday the 24th.  Check out the following for all the fun things they have planned.

InCoWriMo... February 2017

Why have I never heard of this before now?  I am coming late to the party but I love this challenge!

For the month of February people all over the world are mailing letters, cards, care packages to people for no apparent reason.  It is called the International Correspondence Writing Month.

This challenge is of the vintage kind.  It is the original social media.  There is even a website!  You can find out more here.

I am taking the challenge but I am not sending something every day.... I am shooting for one or two per week for this year and then I will up my game next year.

Here is what others are sharing on the challenge...

Three Like Me...

There were so many I thought about but these wound up being my favorites.

I am most like Frankie Heck.... she is a mom that shares my soul!  She loves her crazy imperfect messy, dysfunctional family but if we take a deeper look they are all so much like so many of us in our own families.  Life is not perfect and bills get paid late and school issues arise and kids bicker.  She lives a life so much like mine from that fictional place.  Watching her life is almost like watching a script of my life that is being played out on screen.  I could swear that they are videotaping my life and writing each episode based on that.

I am also a lot like Colette.  I thought about Remy but Colette is so much more like me in the kitchen with her instructional ways from an impatient place.  LOL  Being the woman in a professional kitchen full of male egos is very hard and I have been in those kitchens.  I kept going... I still keep going... for the love of great tasting food that nourishes those around me.  Colette was all about making thoughtful delicious food.

As I looked at all of those characters from Downton Abbey I can most relate to the heartbreaks and triumphs of Lady Grantham as she moves through life with children who don't always make decisions she would choose but she loves them through it all anyway.  She is the rock of that family in many ways even though she is living under her husband and his families traditions and ways.  She is the practical American who is not afraid to speak her mind and yet still a lady who wants it all to be proper and  perfect for those who enter her home.  I am often torn between those same emotions.

I also considered Lorelai and Rory Gilmore.... I am really a combination of the two but opted to go a different direction.  If the truth be told I might be a little like Emily Gilmore, too.  That one all bled together for me.  LOL

So, there is a bit of fun for Saturday.... who would you choose for your three fictional characters?

Working on the Bullet Journal again

I have joined (loosely) the Plan With Me Challenge for December.

I am making some decisions about my bullet journal for the coming year and want to try some things out before we get there.  I am close to the end of this particular Moleskine journal, too, so there is a new one on it's way soon.  I printed the list and have my calendar already in progress and I am loading it up as things get added to my schedule.

As for my setup...

I start every month with a printed calendar so I can have that visual and then I write out the list version to the right of it.

From there I add:

*  Menu plans
* Grocery lists
* Other shopping lists
*  To do around the house lists
*  Books that I want to look for when I have money and time
*  Movies I want to add to our list to watch
*  Crochet projects I want to work on
*  Habit lists
*  Daily to do and checklists
*  Bible study plans and notes from sermons
* Scripture memory verses
*  Quotes from books read and article notes
*  Books in the queue to review (which I am currently behind on because... life!)

Working on other things for the new year like budgeting pages, exercise and food trackers, clothing I need to replace list, big project planning lists, etc...

For the month of December I am doing a 16 Before 2016 list, too.

Want to see more about setting up a bullet journal from a great blogger on this topic?  Check out Boho Berry as she shares her stuff with us!

Other bloggers who run this project each month include Tiny Ray of Sunshine  and Pretty Prints and Paper

How are you preparing for the year ahead?

Do you have a special journal or planner you use to get you
through the holidays and into a new year?

Join me in some Autumn Reading Fun

I have two on my radar right now.  Well, maybe three....

The first one is from Reading Every Season and it started on September 1st with the Fall Into Reading Seasonal Challenge.

Along with that one is the Fall Into Reading Read-a-thon which is during the other one but for only a week.

The third one is the Bi-Annual Dewey 24 Hour Read-a-Thon.  It will be announced soon and it is coming October 17th.

For details on all of these you can follow the links for rules and such.  They are all very flexible but they get us reading and that is the goal, right?
I will be sharing a book list or lists soon.  I have been knee deep in review books lately but have backed off of them more come October through December so I can read some other stuff.  I will probably bombard you with all the reviews in bulk as I finish them.  You know me.... I never read just one book at a time.
I have ordered some books on productivity and habits that I cannot wait to dive into.  I also have the new Jan Karon book coming when it is released.  I need a month of Jan soon!  You will get the lists as I go.
There are also plans for the 31 Days of... Challenge again and I have my little graphic and an outline and topics ready to go so October will be FULL of daily writing here at the ol' blog.
I have also made some cosmetic changes to reflect the season ahead.
Autumn is my favorite!

Thirty One Days of Jane Austen

August 1, 2015 begins a month of Jane Austen... Austen in August officially.

I plan on spending my month reading, watching, learning and exploring more about the life, times and works of Jane Austen.  She is well loved in our home.  My daughter is an avid fan and has drawn me into this world, too.

I thought I would start by putting a few official links up for us to explore as we go through this month.

JaneAusten.org is a great resource to get us started.

There is also an Austen.com with lists of fiction and fan fiction for you to enjoy.

There are several Jane Austen Society sites worldwide

and there are more if you look and there may be one in your particular neck of the woods.

There is an official Facebook Page, too.

PBS Masterpiece has several pages worth exploring with slide shows and if you can get your hands on them you can watch their productions of her works and biographical videos.

Susan Branch has part of her website devoted to her love for all things Jane, too!  She has great photos from her visit to see Jane's home at Chawton.

Don't forget to head over to Roof Beam Reader to sign up to join us as we read Austen all month and check out the Master Post that just went up yesterday, too.

Here is where I am starting...

Jane Austen (16 December 1775 – 18 July 1817)

Happy Reading!!!

New Habits and Looking Ahead...

The book I just finished (and reviewed) has sparked some changes.

Here are some things I have learned about myself in the process of reading this book.... Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin, The following is from my notes:

There are four basic tendencies that most people fit into.  To get a full explanation of all of what I am about to share you should totally just get the book and read, by the way.  LOL

Four Basic Tendencies

1.  Upholder - meets outer and inner expectations (this is my husband)
2.  Questioner - resists outer expectations but meets inner expectations
3.  Obliger - meets outer expectations but resists inner expectations
4.  Rebel - resists outer and inner expectations (this is my oldest son...  LOL no, seriously, it is!)

I am clearly a Questioner with a little Rebel tendency but Questioner wins out over Rebel if there is a question in my mind between the two.  I always go with my inner expectations.  That tendency of meeting inner expectations for me includes what I feel God is leading me toward in my life.  God and His word are part of my inner expectations.  That is how it works out for me but other people don't phase me... I am great at saying no.  My husband is not so great at saying no and loads his plate to overflowing a lot.  He is drawn toward keeping everyone and everything in balance.  I am willing to let go of a rope if I need to if it is not life threatening... he hangs on with dear life because he is expected to.  It explains a lot about our relationship!  LOL

Once I realized that about myself it has made some other areas of my life make more sense.  As I worked through the next chapter on Different Solutions for Different People I began to see some clear cut lines, too.  My husband and I are often opposites in these areas but here is my list.

*   I am a Lark - I tend to lean toward morning person when allowed to follow my own patterns.  My husband is an Owl but forces himself to work in both zones to get it all done.  I am working on working with my natural tendencies more over this coming semester.  I have already implemented an "earlier to bed, early to rise" policy for me.  I am now telling him that he can stay up if he would like but I need to go to bed.

*  I am a procrastinator who is working toward being a Marathoner instead of a Sprinter.  Now, this has nothing to do with running... because I don't do that anymore!  Ha!  It has everything to do with how we approach a task.  I tend to put things off but, for me, the most helpful would be to spread out a larger task and eat the elephant one bite at a time.  I have been moving more and more toward this approach over the last several years but I also have an explanation for the procrastination now.  That is coming shortly in this list.... hold on.

*  I am an underbuyer... I tend to only buy something when I need it and delay spending well (except with books sometimes).  My husband is an overbuyer and hangs onto things he thinks he might need later.  If I don't need it or have not used it then I am totally willing to let it go ASAP.  My husband has been known to hold onto things for the entire duration of our marriage whether he needs it or not.  It is just the difference in our approach.

*  I am a simplicity lover.... the simpler the better.  I don't love an abundance of anything except maybe books but even those are getting culled in the reality of knowing that I cannot read everything so I want to read my favorites.  Less is more for me... I love bare surfaces and empty uncluttered rooms.  I have not been convinced that any of my children are like me in this regard.  It wears me out!

Ok, are you ready for why I procrastinate?

*  I am a finisher and not a starter.  I have the hardest time starting a project and often get overwhelmed at the thought of it but once I get started I will finish ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING I HAVE STARTED!  I cannot NOT finish!!!  It is not in me! (with the exception of a book I am hating... I won't waste my time finishing those anymore but I cannot, honestly, say it does not haunt me a little at first) LOL  I love the feeling of finishing... closing a book... getting a drawer cleaned out... finishing a project or term paper... the end of a semester is totally my favorite and so on and so on!  Dan is a starter with a shelf full of started project lists and notebooks but none of them are finished.  God is so funny pairing us together like that.  LOL  There have been times he has had to push me to start and I have had to push him to finish something.  We are a funny pair.

*  I love familiarity.... this is where Dan and I agree.  We could both watch the same movies, eat the same food, read the same books over and over and over.  New is nice but familiar is our favorite.

*  I am also prevention focused as opposed to promotion focused... I try to make life as comfortable as possible for me and for those around me.  I see the big picture and the problems before they happen.  I love a good well thought out plan where I have contemplated all the fathomable possibilities of what could go wrong along the way.  I sometimes miss things but it is not from lack of trying to catch it all before we start.

*  I take everything in small steps... EV.ER.Y.THING!!!  Big steps freak me out!

All of this works together to help me figure out how to approach habits old and new.  Knowing that I am a finisher and not a starter helps me to see why I am procrastinating and then I am able to make a marathon plan because I like smaller steps and not one giant big step of sprinting to attack bigger projects and habits in my life.  I do my best work in the mornings so I need to put the harder stuff up front and plan for some downtime and familiarity later in the day.  Since I am a prevention focused person I rely heavily on calendar/bullet journals, list making and planning charts to work out what needs to be done.  Also, since I am an underbuyer, menu planning and list making are my best friends when it comes to getting only what we need for the week ahead for meals or for a shopping trip for a project.  I will locate things off the list I already have around the house so I will not double buy things I don't need.  See... they work together!  It makes me feel less insane for my choices knowing these things and then seeing how the rest of my family works helps us to work together better, too.

So, today... I am making some plans for August... writing in my Bullet Journal, lists of the books I need to get read... menus that need to be made... planning some bigger cleaning and clearing projects to make my life more simple and familiar.  I am implementing some new habits for a new school year and planning for the kids to have what they need to get back to school in an organized fashion.

What are you planning for August? Is your mind on the "back-to-school" planning?  Are you changing jobs or going back to school yourself?  What does August look like for you?

Also, do not forget the Austen in August Challenge I shared a few days ago!  I am on the list for hosting a giveaway and if you are not signed up for the challenge on the official post on their website you will not be eligible so go... NOW... and sign up so you can enter my giveaway around the middle of August!  You have to be registered to win any of the giveaways.  Even if you don't read much just enter for the fun that comes with the challenge... but I hope you read, too!  :)

Computer damage....

Mercy, I cannot catch a break with computers.  I have now spilled water on my newest computer and it is in time out until Sunday.... in rice.... hoping it dries out.  Prayers are appreciated.  I am setting another computer up with a monitor for the weekend for the Read-a-thon just to be able to use something other than my phone for checking the blog for all the fun stuff.  I am on my daughter's computer right now.  She is at school and gave me "permission" to use it.  She really does not mind at all.

Secret Church is happening tomorrow night and I am scrambling to find a good way to set that up, too.  I was going to use my computer and it would be simple but now I am not and it just got more complicated.  Pray for this event that is being held all around the world.

Dewey's Read-a-Thon happens all day Saturday.  If I long term use of someone else's computer I will be online and if not I won't.... but I will be reading!  All day....

I also got my book in the mail today....

Full weekend ahead for me but in such a fun and relaxing way.

Pray for my computer.... God can even restore those!

Thanks, my friends!

May will bring some new into my life...

I have finally decided to take a challenge to cut the sugar.  I have searched and searched for just the right time and the right plan.  Well, there is really no bad time to give up sugar I suppose but the right plan has waltzed right into my life.  It is called Whole30.

Do I want to lose some weight?

Who doesn't, right?

But, that is not why I chose this one...

I have Lupus

I have tummy issues

I have skin issues

I have arthritis

I have been sick for a solid month with sinus/allergies and
am just coming off one of the worst sinus infections I have had as an adult.

I have also gained 15 pounds since last October and it has to stop.

This plan has been proven to help with some, if not all of these issues.

I will begin this plan on May 1, 2015.

I have already started the process of testing recipes and reading the original book that goes with this program.  I have also ordered the new one to be released today to the public.

I have several friends who have tried this and there has been nothing but positive feedback because it is not a DIET... it is a detox/reboot that leads to a new way of life.  It is a plan to detox and reboot the system safely with great whole foods that don't deny the palette or the body of any nutrients.  It is meant to use my own body as the means by which I discover what my body can tolerate and what triggers things my body doesn't love.  Once you detox the system for 30 days on proteins, healthy fats and veggies and fruits then you can start to reintroduce grains and dairy back in to see how your body reacts.  Once you KNOW what causes the problems you can make a conscious effort to cut that in your life for good.  This is EXACTLY what I have been looking for.

I am starting here...

and then reading this once it arrives in the mail...

and then I am menu planning using the information in these books along with help from other bloggers and friends who are doing the plan and, of course, PINTEREST resources.

I am going to blog it....
that is the scary part for me because
I am making it public and making myself accountable for all to see...
the good, bad, and ugly.

Yes, you will get before and after pictures.
*shivers*

If you have done this or are doing this or are interested in doing this then chat with me...

Shout out in the comments with any advice you have.

All questions about this program should be directed to the Whole9 site where the original author and experts reside to answer any questions you have and get you started on your own Whole30 journey.  I am on the journey, too, and will be checking in with the experts daily.

Wanta join me?

January 21, 2015

Cold Antler Farm

I have, now, officially read every book Jenna Woginrich has written except her book on chickens.  I plan to read that one when we get chickens again.... sometime.

Her most recent book summarizes her adventures to date.  I have to say that the first book I read by her is still my favorite.  The first book I read was Barnheart.  It was charming and personable.  The second one I read was her first book called Made From Scratch.  This, too, was charming and personable.

Each book was about the latest phase of her journey to a homestead/self sufficient lifestyle.  The most recent one shares new stories and new struggles with a bit more about her philosophy and how the journey has changed her over the years.  She shares vignettes about different aspects of her life on Cold Antler Farm and the community that surrounds her.  There are recipes, too.  It is a great memoir.

I recommend you read her books if you are interested in rural farm stories from the life of a writer/farmer living and working in the northeast.  Reading her stories makes me brave.  I walk away feeling like I could move more toward that life, too.  It doesn't seem easy because it is anything but easy but she makes it seem more achievable.  It can be a stand alone book without the other books but it is really nice knowing the background of where this all started for her so if you are a completist like me then start at the beginning and work your way through them.  Feel free to check out her website, too.

She is open about the fact that she is not a Christian and she is more into celebrating the more Celtic/Druid way of life and farming.  She is not crazy outspoken about it but she does mention it several times.  This particular book was not as full of that as the previous smaller book she wrote called One Woman Farm.  OWF was a bit of a gift type book precursor to Cold Antler Farm.  As a Christian I was not offended or put off by the things she shared even though I don't always agree with her.  She is not negative about those who have different beliefs from her.  The bottom line for her is a shared experiences and adventures with friends and neighbors in a peaceful and lovely setting.
